Holy funk Batman! For months, I have been anticipating the latest release from the Budos Band and as usual the crew at Daptone does not disappoint.

Powered by four percussion player with a trio of horns leading the way, the third album from the Budos Band sounds like the perfect soundtrack for a gritty 70’s blaxploitation flick.

The horn section are the stars of this album. Heavily featured, which can be a risky proposition but works nicely, with Boscoe Mann and guitarist Tommy “TNT” Brenneck producing.

This albums comes as close as you can to capturing the sound and feel of a live Budos Band show, which can’t be beat. The feel of this album is a lot darker than the previous afro-beat sound of their other albums, yet is the perfect album to throw on if you want to start making the walls sweat.

Check out the song “Golden Dunes.”

Mount Carmel
S/T
Stillbreeze

From the first few chords to the final ending fuzzed out bass lines, this record is a breathe of fresh air. Not that the trio in Mount Carmel are necessarily breaking new ground, but the blues-ed out heavy guitars, boogie bass and maniacal drumming are a welcome respite in the age of too many bands relying on garageband and distortion to hide their lack of talent.

Taking their cue from some of the heavy hitters of the mid sixties such as Cream, Blue Cheer and an obvious influence Ten Years After, who they pay tribute to with a cover of “Hear Me Callin.”

Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Mount Carmel lay down a massive sound and positions themselves as a power trio to be reckoned with.

After their amazing release earlier in the year with The Endless Blockade, Bastard Noise come full circle with their newest offering A Culture of Monsters. Teaming up with original Man is the Bastard drummer Joel Connell, noise technicians Eric Wood and WT Nelson combine to form a powerhouse of powerviolence/noise/industrial that few, if any can match.

This albums pushes the trio more into the territory covered by the original Man Is the Bastard: crushing vocals, schizophrenic bass lines, thunderous drums while incorporating electronic sampling and atmospheric type landscapes. All of this combines into one of the most interesting releases of the year. Featuring guest vocals from Nathan Martin (Creation Crucifixation) and Mike Reynolds (Lack of Interest), this albums continues the evolution of the Man Is the Bastard into new realms.

And Bastard Noise don’t just stop there, the album packaging itself is worth picking up. The LP comes in a full -color gatefold jacket and poster, while the cd is manufactured as a miniature lp with an all paper baby-gatefold album jacket and a full color twelve page booklet.

If you enjoy the sounds of your own skull being crushed, Bastard Noise do not disappoint.

Check out the song “Lumberton” below.

On Saturday, August 28th, the infamous Tesco Vee of The Meatmen will be rolling through Generation Records in support of his new book, “Touch and Go: the Complete Hardcore Punk Zine ‘79-’83.” Touch and Go was one of the most influential hardcore punk zines with it’s biting and sarcastic style. It was one of the first
zines to really recognize the importance of the D.C. scene (Minor Threat, Scream) while also writing about their own burgeoning Detroit
Hardcore / Punk scene (Necros, Negative Approach, Fix). This book is a complete collection of all the issues and is a must have for any Punk & Hardcore fan.

Tesco Vee will be performing with his band, The Hate Police at 1:00PM. He will then be signing books at 2:00PM. Also appearing will be Tony Rettman, the
author of “Why Be Something That You’re Not”, a book chronicling the history of Detroit Hardcore from ‘79-’85
which includes a forward by Tesco Vee.

There be will plenty of copies of both books available during the in-store. Come by and pick up signed copies.

And if that’s not enough, you can catch Tesco Vee and the Hate Police opening up for Negative
Approach later that night at Santo’s
Party House.
